Fab-YOU-lously Simple D.I.Y. Snowman Treat Jars

BIKE (2)Here at my house in Colorado, we have about four inches of snow on the ground (though the high country has much more) and the high temps are in the low 20’s.  I’ve got Taco Soup in the crock pot (it makes the whole house smell SO good), my men (my hubby and two teenage sons) are all busy watching football on the tube and our three cats are curled up in a pile sleeping. I live for moments like this because it means that I get to dig out my glue gun and enjoy some uninterrupted crafting time.

Now that Thanksgiving is over and we have snow on the ground, I am in the mood for a little holiday crafting, and what could be better than a cute craft project that doubles as a fun way to package up holiday treats? I especially love this project because it is SO simple that a child could make it (though I might swap out the hot glue gun for some regular craft glue if I were doing this project with a child) and is made up of supplies that are cheap and easy to find at most any store that sells craft supplies.

To make your own super simple and yet super FabYOUlous Doily Snowman Treat Jars, just follow these simple instructions…

D.I.Y. Doily Snowman Treat Jars

Gather Your Supplies: For this fun craft project you will need…Craft supplies

Crocheted Doilies (I purchased mine at JoAnn Fabrics but you can find them cheap at most craft stores)

Containers (I used two different sized Mason jars and a larger clear, plastic bucket that had handles and a lid but you’ll want to choose your containers based on the size of doilies that you plan to use. I especially like the way the Mason jar snowmen turned out)

Decorative Christmas Ribbon (You’ll want thin ribbon–I used 3/8 inch–for the hat band and wider ribbon to make your snowman’s scarf based upon the size of the doily you choose.)

Black and Orange Felt

Black Pom Poms (I used one inch pom poms for the eyes and mouth pieces on my larger snowman. For the smaller snowmen I just used black felt for the eyes and mouths)

Sprigs from some Holiday Greenery

Glue Gun (or regular craft glue if doing this project with children)

Scissors

Glue Your Doily to Your Container: I choose to glue my doily a little low on my container to allow some extra room for the top hat. You’ll still want to allow a little room at the bottom for your snowman’s scarf though.

branded snowmanBuild Your Snowman: This is the fun part. The doily will obviously serve as your snowman’s head but now he needs a face. If you are using black pom poms, arrange the pom poms to form the snowman’s smile and his eyes. If you are using black felt, simply cut out black pieces to form the smile and eyes. Don’t worry about making these pieces perfect circles–they are supposed to resemble lumps of coal so asymmetrical is fine. Once your pieces are cut out, arrange them on the doily. I always like to lay out my entire snowman face before I glue anything down.

Once your eyes and smile are in place, it is time to add the carrot nose. Cut this out of your orange felt but again, don’t worry about perfection; I mean, who has ever seen a perfectly shaped carrot? I like to angle my snowman noses up a bit because I think it looks cute but the placement of the nose is up to you.

Once you have your snowman face laid out the way you like it, it is time to glue the pieces into place.

Give Your Snowman a Scarf: Using the ribbon that you chose for your snowman’s scarf, cut a piece that is a little more than twice the diameter of your doily. Tie a loose knot in the middle of the ribbon and glue the knot underneath and off to one side of your doily (see photo for positioning). Once the knot is glued in place, glue the long parts of the scarf underneath your snowman’s “chin” and trim if they seem too long.

Top Him Off with a Hat: Using the black felt, create a snazzy top hat for your snowman. I did this by cutting one long (the length of my doily’s diameter) thin rectangle as the hat’s brim and another shorter, wider rectangle for the top of the hat. You could easily cut the hat as one piece though–just look at the photo for the shape. Next, glue the hat pieces (or piece) in place on your snowman’s head. After the hat is on your snowman’s head, it is time to add some thin ribbon as an accent for the hat–simply cut the ribbon to the appropriate length and glue in place.

Add a Little Flair: I like to snip a few pieces of holiday greenery and glue them into the knot of my snowman’s scarf (see photo). This step is optional but I think that it gives our snowman a little added flair.

Fill Your Container with Goodies to Give Away: I’ve used these snowman treat jars to give everything from chocolate kisses and cookies to peppermint sticks and holiday potpourri. This year however; I plan to stuff the jars with cotton balls, a bottle of pretty nail polish, a nail file, clippers and small tube of lotion for a Snow Man-icure set. The possibilities are endless and are only limited by the size of your jar/container and your imagination.
